Woman Killed in Pakistan Shelling

3rd September 1998

SRINAGAR: A woman was killed and several houses were damaged while a press party had a providential escape as Pakistani troops resumed heavy artillery fire in the Kargil sector of Ladakh region last evening, an official spokesman said today. Pakistani rangers resorted to heavy artillery fire on civilian areas in the vicinity of Kargil town killing Sayeda Archoo Fatima in the worst-hit Goma village and forcing the panicky residents of the area to rush for safety, he said. At least 17 shells hit Goma as the firing went on for an hour causing heavy damage to property and standing crops in the area, he said. Senior civil authorities have rushed to the village to assess the situation.

The spokesman said Pakistani troops had been targeting the 434- km Srinagar-Leh National Highway for the last two days disrupting traffic on the arterial road. A press party, visiting Ladakh in connection with the Ladakh festival, had a providential escape in the shelling, he said.
