This advertisement was carried recently by the major English and Urdu dailies in Pakistan. The Lashkar-e-Tayyaba is a self-acknowledged training camp for terrorists operating in Kashmir Valley with the Nawaz Sharif government, like previous governments in Pakistan, giving them assured patronage. Last year, Mr. Mushahid Hussain, a senior minister in Mr. Sharif's Cabinet, visited the terrorist training camp run by the organisation and addressed a meeting which swore to take revenge on India and its defence forces for their action against the militants. The Lashkar-e-Tayyaba is not an underground organisation and advertises its programmes and boasts of its "operations" in the Kashmir Valley through advertisements, active pamphleteering and meetings which are in the full knowledge of the Pakistan government.
Documents available with The Asian Age include a diary for 1999 in which this organisation has given detailed list of its "martyrs" who died "in action" in the Valley last year.
The list of "martyrs" runs into hundreds and the diary specifies 179 clear cases of action by its militants inside the Valley with the columns being divided into "place of encounter/skirmish, kind of action, martyrs, casually and loss of enemy." For instance, it reports that 80 soldiers of the Indian Army were allegedly killed in a camp attack at Waripura, Kupwara; three soldiers were allegedly killed and several injured in the militants' ambush on vehicles at Nopura. Doda; one major and two faujis were allegedly killed in what is described as an abrupt attack at Poonch. The fact is that the list certifies the kind of activity that the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba is indulging in with no resistance and in fact encouragement from the Pakistan government. The parent organisation, the Markaz-ad-dawa wal Irshad, which justifies the terrorism through religious preaching, has acquired over 170 acres of land, according to the diary, which is 31 km away from Lahore and is named Markaz-e-Tayyaba. A jama masjid, an university, students hostel, central library , market place where "forbidden things in Islam will not be allowed," housing colonies, fish farms, workshops and agricultural farms are being set up.
India has taken up the issue of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the Valley at different levels. Successive Pakistan governments have denied their involvement even though for the past few years the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba has become very open about its activities with senior members of the Nawaz Sharif government making regular visits to the camp. A pamphlet titled "Why are we waging jihad speaks of this being "obligatory for taking back Spain where Muslims ruled for 800 years; whole of India, including Kashmir, Hyderabad, Assam, Nepal, Burma, Bihar, Junargarh, Palestine occupied by Israel, Hungary, Cyprus, Sisli, Ethiopia and Russia etc." An article carried in the mouth piece Al Dawa contains strong anti-India propaganda and goes on to speak of the need for nuclear navel warfare. It insists that the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba should be given submarines as the only method to "paralyse Israel and India." Details of actions in Kashmir and the numbers killed are available in almost all publications of this outfit.
