Suicide bomber killed in blast

Srinagar: A car-borne suicide bomber attacked the 15 Corps headquarters here this afternoon and was killed. In another incident in Sopore, a powerful blast left two school children dead and 28 injured. At least five army soldiers guarding the 15 Corps headquarters at Batwara were injured when the suicide bomber driving a Maruti car attacked it. Major C. K. Roy, in-charge of the Batwara gate security, said the car was stopped by the security staff around 4-25 p.m. Immediately, the bomber detonated the bomb which exploded with a big bang blowing him into pieces. The injured, including five soldiers, two police constables and a civilian, were taken to hospital where the condition of three of them is critical. Two other vehicles were also damaged in the blast. Jaish-e-Mohamad, a new militant outfit launched by Maulana Mazood Azhar, one of the militants released in the wake of the IA plane hijack, claimed responsibility for the attack. In a similar incident, two persons were killed and 28 injured when a grenade was thrown towards an Army vehicle in Iqbal Market. However, it missed the target and exploded on the road injuring several people. Eyewitnesses said the troops opened fire in retaliation in which a boy and a girl were killed.
