Srinagar: The senior separatist leader and member of the Hurriyat Conference executive member, Sheikh Abdul Aziz, was released today on the direction of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, after eight years of detention. He was arrested on May 31, 1993 when he was chief commander of the Al Jehad. He is one of the founders of the People''s League political organisation. During his detention he was kept in a number of jails in and outside the State. Talking to reporters in the court premises, Mr. Aziz said the Kashmir issue could be resolved only through tripartite talks and Pakistan''s involvement in such process was important. The Hurriyat Conference welcomed Mr. Aziz''s release and a number of his supporters gathered outside the court. Pakistani troops continued shelling in Keran and Uri sectors, and seven civilians were injured and many houses damaged. In other militancy-related incidents in the Kashmir Valley six including a BSF jawan were killed. Defence sources confirmed that the Indian troops retaliated to the fire from the other side.
