New Delhi: Former chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, has preferred to maintain distance from Pakistan and chosen not to attend the much-publicised marriage of Hurriyat executive Abdul Gani Lone''s son with Pak-based JKLF supremo Amanullah Khan''s daughter Asma. Mirwaiz, who according to Lone, was to attend the wedding in Rawalpindi, flew back from Doha where he had gone to attend the summit of Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC). ''Hurriyat executive had asked me to attend the Doha summit and there was no word about going to attend the marriage,'' Umer said prior to leaving for Srinagar. Farooq denied that any pressure was exerted by the Indian government for not going to Pakistan and said ''this was not on my agenda.'' Lone had stated that Mirwaiz Farooq would be performing the ''nikah'' ceremony. However, Hurriyat insiders say that Farooq''s not attending the marriage was a fall-out of differences between him and Lone over the functioning of Hurriyat Conference. Besides, Farooq wanted to avoid travel to Pakistan following his severe remarks about that country in the special session of the Hurriyat Conference last month. (PTI)
