Annan refuses to meet Lone

New Delhi: UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today said the UN resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir were not 'self-enforcing" and the only way out was negotiations between the two parties. This is a clear rejection of Pakistan's persistent demand for implementation of the resolutions. In a rebuff to the Hurriyat Conference, which claims to be a principal party to the Kashmir dispute, Annan declined to meet to Abdul Gani Lone. The Hurriyat confirmed this. "The UN office had told them that the Secretary General had a tight schedule and could not accommodate their request," a spokesman said. Stung by Annan's statement in Islamabad, the Hurriyat Conference had met on Monday and decided to send Lone to explore the possibility of meeting Annan. The turning down of the request is likely to go down well with the Jammu and Kashmir Government.
