Srinagar: Police foiled attempts by militants to blow up highly fortified Civil Secretariat building in Srinagar when two powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered on Thursday morning in the vicinity of Secretariat complex. The timely detection of IEDs was made two hours before the state heads of security agencies and official media organisations were scheduled to meet in the Secretariat. Sources said that on Thursday morning police intercepted a three-wheeler near a cinema house at Sathra Shahi locality in Civil Lines area of the Capital city. The cinema house is located around 200 yards from the multi-storeyed Civil Secretariat complex. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the militants were planning to use the IEDs to blow up the Civil Secretariat complex, police sources said. Militants have made several attempts to blow up the building during the decade-long strife in the State. Police and security forces have increased vigil in the summer capital following the recovery of IEDs. Eight militants and two Army jawans were killed in various clashes between militants and security forces across Kashmir Valley since Wednesday evening. At least 20 civilians were injured. Three of them critically in a grenade attack at Bandipora town in North Kashmir on Thursday afternoon.
