More than 13,000 militants killed in J&K: Officials

Srinagar: Indian security forces have shot dead more than 13,000 militants in Kashmir since the launch of an armed insurgency in 1989, according to official figures released on Independence Day on Wednesday.A government statement listed some 13,326 militants who had been killed and blamed arch foe Pakistan for sponsoring a ''proxy war'' in Kashmir that had cost the lives of 9,319 ''innocent civilians''. The statement said 23 tonnes of explosive had been seized over the same period, along with more than 5,000 anti-personnel mines and nearly 22,500 AK series assault rifles.
