Abdullah wants automatic weapons for VDC members

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said that he would take up with union home minister L.K. Advani the issue of supplying automatic weapons to village defence committee (VDC) members as well as upgrading weaponry for the state police. Abdullah said that he had spoken to Advani previously about weaponry requirement to meet the challenge of militancy. ''The home minister will also be requested to consider supply of wireless sets for VDCs for prompt communication to nab militants,'' he said. He added that jobs would be given to one eligible dependent of each killed in the Mahore massacre. He also announced Rs 10,000 to each injured VDC member.
