Srinagar: Six people including a commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, have been killed in separate incidents, a police spokesman said on Saturday. He said Bilal Sangeen, a ''divisional commander'' of the Hizbul Mujahideen was killed in a shootout with the police''s Special Operations Group (SOG). The firefight happened at Badshah Nagar, on the outskirts of Srinagar, in the early hours of Saturday. The SOG, which specialises in counter-insurgency operations, also shot dead a militant associate of Sangeen, the police spokesman said. Sangeen had carried out several attacks against the security forces in Srinagar and the Budgam district of central Kashmir in the past five years, he said. There was no immediate reaction from the Hizbul Mujahideen to the killing of Sangeen, which police said was a major setback for the militant group. Sangeen is the seventh prominent Hizbul militant to be killed by police in the past month. Two Islamic militants and a civilian were meanwhile killed in an overnight gunbattle at Sogam in Kupwara district, 110 km north of Srinagar, police said. Suspected militants shot a policeman in the northern district of Baramulla late on Friday, and he died in hospital early on Saturday, the spokesman said.
