1059 militants killed since January this year

Srinagar: As many as 359 police and security forces personnel have lost their lives and 872 sustained injuries in counter-insurgency operations across the state since January till August 15 this year. The martyrs include 76 officers and Jawans of J&K police, 232 security forces personnel, 46 SPOs and five village defence committee members. The casualties have mostly occurred due to grenades and IED explosions hurled and triggered by Pak sponsored mercenaries during ambushes. The militants, on the other hand, suffered three-fold casualties. Police and security forces have eliminated 1059 militants, most of them foreign mercenaries, during the period. 49 of the militants also surrendered to the authorities alongwith arms and ammunition. Four militants and two civilians died in six inter-group clashes of militants. 209 incidents of abduction at the hands of ultras have also been registered. Innocent people have been made the target by militants to create scare in the minds of peace loving people of the state. Continuing with their tool of terrorism, militants have killed 589 civilians, 99 of them in grenade attacks and explosions and 490 in firing. Besides, militants have inflicted injuries on 1372 civilians with their firing and explosions. 99 of the civilians have lost their lives in cross firing between militants and police-security forces from January to August 15 this year. Police and security forces have made a big haul of arms, ammunition and explosives during the reported period. They have recovered from militants 880 rifles of AK series with over one lac rounds and 2377 magazines, 219 pistols-revolvers with 197 magazines and 2416 rounds, nine UMGs with six magazines and 2274 rounds, three LMGs -SLRs, two 3.3 rifles with ammunition, eight sniper rifles with 2402 rounds and 108 RPGs. In addition, 227 rockets, 24 rocket launchers, 198 rocket boosters, 2517 grenades-hand grenades, 1535 Kgs of RDX, 651 Kgs of explosives, 250 IEDs, 91 anti-personnel mines, six anti-tank mines, 1346 detonators, 351 electric detonators, 291 wireless sets, 22 binoculars and 170 metres of cordex wire have also been recovered during the period under reference.
