London: Union home minister L.K. Advani’s statement that the Centre may give amnesty to security forces in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir has sparked off angry reactions from human rights organisations in London. A spokesperson for the British section of Amnesty International told The Asian Age: “It is a mistake to think that placing security officials above the law can, in any way, help bring peace to Jammu and Kashmir. Such a move will only undermine the rule of law and respect for human rights.” According to reliable sources at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British government is not considering putting out a statement on the matter at this moment. It believes that the Indian government is, at this stage, only “seriously considering” the issue.
