Six Hizb militants killed in encounter

HELD SRINAGAR: Six Hizbul Mujahdeen militants were killed by Indian troops in Sona Bari village near Kokar Nag in Islamabad (Annantnag) district on Saturday. The encounter was going on when last reports came in. Thousands of people on Saturday held massive demonstrations against excesses and molestation of women in Chechpora Monghaal in the same district.Reports reaching here say that on Friday evening, unknown militants attacked an Indian army petrol in the Hechpora Village in Monghaal in Islamabad (Annantnag) district. Two Indian army men sustained injuries in the attack. On Saturday morning, troops cordoned off the village for crackdown. The male inmates of the village were asked to assemble at one place where severe thrashing was given to most of them. Locals said that troops segregated young people from the gathering and subjected them indiscriminate beating with sticks, rods and rifle butts. Some old people were also not spared. More than 30 people received injuries in the threshing by troops.During the course of crackdown, reports say, the troops entered many houses under cordon and molested a number of women. About seven women were molested by troops, after getting severe beating. The troops also tore the clothes of many women, who reacted with every one coming their way.A complete shutdown was observed in the area on Saturday. People also held protest demonstrations and took out procession, demanding withdrawal of troops from the area. They also raised slogans against the state government.Six militants, owing allegiance to Hizbul Mujahideen, were killed by Indian army in the Sona Brari village near famous health resort, Veeri Nag, in Islamabad district on Saturday. The encounter was going on while this report was being filed. Besides regular Indian army, the border security force (BSF) and special operation group (SOG) of state police also took part in the encounter. The army was represented by 10 grenadiers. Police said four AK rifles were recovered from the possession of the slain Hizb militants. Two of the deceased have been identified as Zahoor Ahmad Gani s-o Abdul Gani and Abid Hussain of Nowgam Islaabad.Militants shot dead one Shabir Ahmad Bhat at Adipora in Sopore early on Saturday. Mohammad Maqbool Bhat s-o Haji Mohammad Ramazan of Tappar Pattan in Baramulla district was shot at and injured outside his home. He was rushed to a medical institute here, where his condition is stated to be critical. One unidentified militant was killed in an encounter at Kam Kari in Michhal sector of Kupwara district early on Saturday. His identity could not be ascertained immediately. In the old city here, militants hurled two hand-grenades on central reserve police on Saturday. Al-Umar Mujahdeen has claimed responsibility of the attack.
