Jammu: Security forces shot dead seven militants in three separate gunbattles in Kashmir, police said on Tuesday. The clashes took place in Poonch and Rajouri districts in western Kashmir from late on Monday. Militants, who have been fighting Indian rule since 1989, also fired rockets and damaged a bridge in Rajouri district, police said. Violence has soared in the Himalayan region since a mid-July summit between India and Pakistan ended in a deadlock over Kashmir. Authorities say more than 30,000 people have been killed in insurgency-related violence in the last 12 years.
