Lashkar attacks army convoy in J-K, 5 soldiers die

SRINAGAR: LASHKER-e-TOIBA (LeT) militants today carried out a suicide attack on an Army convoy killing five security personnel in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said. Two foreign mercenaries, who launched the attack, were gunned down by the troops at Janbazpora, the sources said. Elsewhere in the valley, eight people, including two Pakistani intruders and two ultras, were killed, they said. Two heavily-armed LeT militants identified as Abu Hyder and Abu Rehman, both foreigners, targeted an Army convoy on way to Baramulla from Kupwara at Chaka Mod this afternoon. The troops fired back and in the ensuing encounter, one jawan died and seven others injured. Four among the injured, including a JCO, succumbed in a hospital. The bodies of both the militants were recovered during searches near the site. Army gunned down two intruders at Torna post near the Line of Control while trying to sneak into the valley from across the border, they said. An LeT militant was shot dead by a search party at Sonian- Syedna in Watergam area. Troops killed a Pakistani militant, Akthar Khan, during search operations at Kawani Gali in Kupwara last night. Bullet riddled bodies of two persons, abducted and later killed by militants, were recovered from Ratnipora-Bonagam in Baramulla today. A shopkeeper was killed when the service rifle of a jawan went off accidentally at Shopian in Pulwama. A woman, injured by a burqa clad militant inside a shop in Pattan of Baramulla yesterday, succumbed today. Militants hurled a grenade and fired on police guards posted at a telephone exchange at Ashmuqam in Anantnag last night, injuring SPO Gulzar Ahmad.
