SRINAGAR: Nearly 600 BSF personnel, including 32 officers, have died in Kashmir since militancy started in the state in 1989.Inspector General, BSF, Naresh Mehra, told reporters here last week that 43 BSF personnel, including six officers, had died fighting militants this year. At the same time, the security forces had killed 2,147 militants and arrested 9,136 militants between 1990 and November, 2001.Also, 900 militants had surrendered their arms during the same period. This year, the BSF has seized 290 kg of explosives and 86 IEDs with 81 wireless sets from militants so far. The IG said all attempts were being made to thwart any infiltration bid by militants in occupied-Kashmir.Highlighting the role of the BSF in the trouble- torn Valley, Mehra said Rs 6 lakh had been spent on various schools and Rs 11 lakh on providing water supply and building toilets in 57 villages.
