J&K elections in October

Jammu: Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in the first week of October and the National Conference hopes that in the next six months it will be able to further consolidate its political position in the state. While Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah dropped a broad hint to this effect on Thursday, those close to him disclosed that the National Conference (NC) was under pressure from its ministers not to go for early elections even by a day. The ministers feel that the party had received the mandate in the 1996 elections to rule the state for six years and, therefore, there is no point in holding elections earlier than scheduled.
