Srinagar: The National Conference working committee meeting in Jammu on Friday concluded with a unanimous resolution to elect Omar Abdullah as its next president in May in order to inject new blood in the party before the Assembly elections. The NC has also constituted a panel headed by its general secretary Sheikh Azir Ahmad to decide on the candidates and other poll-related matters. He will be helped by a team of seven other veteran party members — five from the Kashmir Valley and one each from Jammu and Ladakh regions. Sharing details of the working committee deliberations with reporters, housing and urban development minister Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah and Sheikh Nazir said that the party decided that it would spread out all over the state in preparation for the elections. The party panel would review the performance and accordingly take its decision. The National Conference dwelt at length on the issues of the restoration of greater autonomy, the current situation in the country with particular reference to Gujarat and the National Conference’s role vis-a-vis other allies in the NDA at the Centre and the BJP. Mr Shah said that the party resolved that it would continue to pursue its agenda for greater autonomy in the state. “There will be a forceful campaign on the issue and the matter would be taken to its logical conclusion through discussions and debate with the Centre,” he said. The party also discussed the killings in Gujarat and its fallout on the political landscape of the country.
