Srinagar: Former Chairman of All Party Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Gilani was taken into police custody on Friday while he was on his way to northern township of Sopore. Police stopped Gilani at Pattan on Srinagar-Baramullah highway and lodged him in the local police station. He was supposed to address a Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid Muslim Peer Sopore and lead an anti-election rally in the town. Gilani is the sole Hurriyat leader, who has been campaigning against Assembly polls, likely to be held in October. He earlier led massive anti-election rallies at Pulwama, Shopian, Bandipora and Baramullah. However, Gilani''s arrest seems to be aimed at preventing him from reaching out to the people.
