8 terrorists, BSF jawan, ex-ultra killed; 3 injured

Jammu: Army early today foiled an infiltration attempt on the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sector in Poonch district eliminating an entire group of five foreign mercenaries. Two army jawans were injured in the operation. In another encounter, three terrorists and a Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were killed while another jawan was wounded in Mahore tehsil in Udhampur district. A surrendered militant was shot dead by a terrorist in Kishtwar while two civilians were kidnapped in Budhal. Official sources said the troops spotted an infiltration attempt by a group of five terrorists along Panjni nullah in Balakote sector of Mendhar tehsil in Poonch district in early hours of this morning. As the terrorists came well within the firing range, the army personnel first asked them to surrender. However, they refused to do so and started firing on the soldiers, who retaliated. Exchange of firing between the two sides continued for two hours in which three terrorists were killed and two army jawans were injured. The jawans were evacuated to a military hospital. Two other ultras managed to escape towards a forest area, where they were chased by army and shot dead this afternoon. Bodies of all five terrorists have been recovered from the encounter site. All of them looked like Pakistani terrorists. They were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit but their identity hasnít been established so far. Recoveries made from the spot included five AK rifles and a huge quantity of ammunition and explosives. Another encounter took place between a patrol party of the BSF and a group of terrorists at village Guin in Mahore tehsil of Udhampur district this morning. The encounter started when a BSF patrol party carried out searches in Guin after being targeted with an IED explosion by the terrorists. In the two hour operation, the BSF jawans eliminated three hardcore terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit. A BSF jawan Roshan Lal also sacrificed his life in the encounter while another soldier Domnic Soren, head constable was injured. The injured BSF jawan was evacuated to an army hospital in serious condition. Slain terrorists have been identified as Abu Usmaan, a Pakistani, Ghulam Mohd S-o Habib R-o Vijambara, Mahore and Abdul Gani S-o Abdul Akbar R-o Mahore. Two AK-56 rifles, three magazines, 70 rounds, three hand grenade, one wireless set, one binocular and some personal belongings of the terrorists were recovered from the spot, the sources said. In addition, a diary of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit was also seized from pocket of one of the terrorist. Sources said the diary contained some important information regarding the terrorist network in Mahore. The diary was being de-coded by the security officers, they added. A former militant Masood Ganai S-o Ghulam Mohd Ganai R-o Asthan Pai was shot dead by a terrorist from point blank range with a pistol outside a graveyard at 0600 hours today when he was returning from morning prayers at Asthan Pai in Kishtwar tehsil of Doda district. Masood Ganai was a terrorist of JKLF outfit and had surrendered in 1998. Later, he was detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) but was bailed out. Ganai died on spot in the firing while the ultra fled away. Police rushed to the spot and started a search operation for the terrorist, who was believed to be a local. A bandh was observed in Kishtwar today against the killing. Meanwhile, a group of terrorists kidnapped two civilians Taj Ahmed S-o Nissar Ahmed and Kabir, from their houses at village Khawas in Budhal area of Rajouri district last night. Their whereabouts remained uncertain till this evening. A police party was fired upon by the terrorists at village Rolka in Bani tehsil of Kathua last night. The cops retaliated but the terrorists managed to escape. Police continued searches on Rolka forests but the terrorists remained untraced.
