Vajpayee vows not to repeat mistakes in Kashmir

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said on Tuesday past mistakes in Kashmir State will not be repeated. 'Everyone appreciated the polls (in Kashmir) and with these elections, a new chapter in the history of Jammu and Kashmir has been opened ... I can assure you that whatever mistakes (were) committed in the past, will not be repeated,' Mr Vajpayee told parliament. Elections in Indian- administered Kashmir were held last September and October and a government led by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed came to power. 'People cast their vote facing bullets and gave a strong reply to the enemy,' Mr Vajpayee said. He reiterated that the Rs 60 billion aid package for development of Kashmir announced by him last year. 'We want a railway line up to Srinagar,' he said. -AFP
