Srinagar: Border Security Force personnel on Friday gunned down three Lashker-e- Taiba (LeT) militants in an encounter in Anantnag district's Yaripora village. The area is about 15 km from where Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is to attend a public function in Qazigund on Saturday, official sources said. The encounter occurred when troops of the 52nd battalion of the force laid a cordon around suspected militant hideouts, the sources said. In the ensuing gunbattle, three militants were killed by the BSF men. The militants are believed to be foreigners and the encounter lasted over an hour. Three AK assault rifles and ammunition were recovered from the slain men. The killings came at a time when the troops had intensified anti-militant operations in Anantnag following the interception of a cross-border message by LeT militants calling for a 'high profile action' during the Vajpayee's visit to Qazigund. He would be laying the foundation of a railway bridge and a railway reservation centre there on Saturday. The operation was still in progress and further details are awaited, the sources added.
