Srinagar: With the election of Nazir Ahmad Kashani as new chief (Amir) of Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir, the position of estranged Hurriyat leader and prominent Jamaat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has become strong within both, the Jamaat and the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. Nazir Ahmed Kashani, though a known moderate like the outgoing Amir, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, is considered very close to the hardliner, Geelani. While Kashani bagged 59 votes, Bhat could manage only 30. The huge margin of votes to Kashani, according to sources, is said to be facilitated by the Geelani camp. Geelani has recently been in a controversy, following his showdown with Sajjad Lone's People's Conference and later for openly defying the outgoing Jamaat amir, Bhat.
