17 Militants With Huge Arms, Ammunition Surrender

Jammu: Seventeen militants belonging to various terrorist outfits and hailing from general area of Surankote in District Poonch surrendered today before the police and the army authorities. A huge quality of arms and ammunition including 17 AK series rifles, 2 Pika Machine Guns, 2 UMGs, 2 RPGs, 1 Mortor and 8 wireless sets were also handed over by the surrenderees. Eight of the surrenderees belonged to Tehrik-e-Jehad which included its divisional commander and 2 district commanders, 3 to LET including a district commander, 5 were from JUM while one surrender militant was from HUJI. Reports said the surrendered ultras hailed from the oganizations like TEJ and JUM were completely wiped out in District Poonch. The surrender of LET militants also dealt a severe blow to the morale of this outfit and a large number of over ground workers were identified and dealt under law. GOC 16 Corps Lt. General T.P.S Brar and IGP, Jammu zone, P.L Gupta were present at Surankote where the function was held. Speaking on the occasion, General Brar complimented the efforts of the police, security iforce and the civilians in working together for improving the security situation in the area. He also said that army would continue to maintain some position in the higher reaches of Surankote Pursuant to Hill Kaka operation so that the security situation could improve further. IGP, Jammu zone in his remarks, ascribed the turn-round in situation culminating in surrender of militants to an excellent rapport between the people and the security forces including the police. He assured those who surrendered that the government would took into their cases with empathy towards their rehabilitation and their security requirements. Describing the association of a large number of civilians in support of state security apparatus as a welcome development. Gupta contended that this done could provide an answer to the sense of insecurity prevalent in remote areas, which did not have a regular presence of thePolice or Army. Present on the occasion were GoC Romeo Force, Maj. General H.S Lidder, DIG Rajouri- Poonch Range , S.M. Sahai, Deputy Commissioner, Poonch, SSP Poonch and a large number of prominent citizens of Surankote. Those surrendered include: Mohd Rafiq S-o Noor Mohd of Mahore (Distt.
