Politician shot dead in Kashmir

Srinagar: Three suspected terrorists dragged a politician out of his home and shot him dead in Srinagar on Thursday, police said. The masked attackers fired shots into Mukhtar Bhat, Vice President of the youth wing of Janata Dal, said MA Shah, a police officer. He was killed instantly. Police also defused an improvised explosive device hidden in a metal container by terrorists on Thursday. The device was intended to explode on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, Shah said. Traffic was disrupted for two hours on the highway as police searched for terrorists responsible for the bomb, said Shah. Meanwhile, an army ammunition dump caught fire in Sunderwani, a forest region 100 kilometers north of Srinagar, an army officer said on condition of anonymity. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, the officer said, adding there were no casualties.
