British Envoy Condemns Attack On Kashmiri Politicians
15 April 2004
New Delhi: The British High Commissioner to India, Michael Arthur, has strongly condemned the recent attacks on Kashmiri politicians. Sir Michael said these attacks were an attempt to destroy the normal political processes that all democrats supported. In a letter to the People's Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti, the High Commissioner said he was relieved to hear that she escaped unhurt in the militant attack on a PDP rally in Uri on April 8. Conveying his sympathy to the family members of those killed in the attack, Sir Michael expressed admiration for the courage shown by Ms. Mehbooba Mufti and others in pursuing the path of peace and democratic politics in Jammu and Kashmir despite the dangers that they faced. Stressing that violence had no place in the search for a solution in Kashmir, the High Commissioner hoped that despite the very difficult circumstances, people would turn out to express their preferences in the coming elections.
