Make LoC A Permanent Border: U.S. Congressman
23 April 2004
Washington DC: A leading United States Congressman has said that the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir should be made a permanent border to settle the Kashmir issue. 'I believe, the reasonable solution to the Kashmir issue is to make the Line of Control the border between India and Pakistan,' Congressman Joe Wilson, said in a speech to the Heritage Foundation. He, however, said the U.S. should not be drawn into the historical arguments over Kashmir. Urging an open border policy to reunite families and increase trade in the region, he said, 'The people in both countries feel optimistic about peace. This is so mutually beneficial for both countries.' 'Although Pakistan denies any involvement ... many Indian government officials point to training camps in Pakistan- controlled Kashmir, indoctrination in religious schools known as madrassas and continued fund-raising by extremist groups in Pakistan as obstacles to peace in Kashmir,' he said.
