Militants launch poll-eve strikes in Anantnag

Jammu: Stepping up their strikes on the eve of polling in Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency tomorrow, militants tonight carried out a series of attacks targetting two CRPF camps, a polling booth and the house of a ruling PDP leader in Anantnag district injuring six people including two poll staff. The ultras fired Rifle-Propelled Grenade at a CRPF camp outside a polling station in Sarnal injuring six persons, including two poll officials, official sources here said. In Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sufti Sayeed’s home town in Bijbehara, militants hurled a rifle grenade towards a polling station injuring a head constable. The ultras also attacked the residence of CPI MLC Abdul Rahman in Anantnag district. However the explosion failed to cause any loss of life or property. In another attack, the ultras fired a rifle grenade towards a polling station housed in a school at Badzagam. However, no casualties were reported. An Improvised Explosive Device was planted at a school- turned-polling booth in Qazigund area of Anantnag town but it was detected and defused by the Army at around 9 pm, said the sources. Meanwhile, four militants, including two self-styled commanders of pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen were among five persons killed in militancy-related violence in Kashmir where security forces arrested a militant and recovered two kgs of RDX from his possession since last evening, an official spokesman said today. Two militants identified as Hafiz Waheed, a self-styled battalion commander and Khaliq Bhai, group commander of HM were killed in gunbattle with security forces at Padderpora-Shopian in south Kashmir Pulwama district last evening, the spokesman said. An unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces at Hariparigam in Tral area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district today. The encounter broke out when militants opened fire on the troops of 138 battalion BSF in the area who laid a cordon following specific information about presence of militants, the spokesman said, adding the operation was continuing when last reports were received. He said another unidentified militant was killed in a gunbattle with security forces at Sumlar-Bandipora in Baramulla district today. One AK rifle, its three magazines, 160 rounds and a hand grenade were recovered from the possession of the slain militant, he added. Militants shot at and critically wounded one Gauhar Ahmed Dar near his house at Walipora in Pulwama district last night. The victim has been hospitalized, the spokesman said. He said a security jawan and a woman pedestrain were injured as militants hurled a grenade and followed it by firing on a patrolling party of security forces near local hospital at Haripora-Kulgam in Anantnag district last evening. A girl identified as Gousia was injured when militants tossed a grenade at Sarnal in Anantnag town last evening, the spokesman said. Security forces nabbed a militant at Manloo in Pulwama district last evening and recovered 2 kgs of RDX, 2 grenades and a wireless set from his possession. A BSF spokesman said troops of the 137 battalion carried out a search operation at Kashira forest in Kupwara district yesterday and recovered nine Chinese grenades, two hand grenades, one UBGL grenade, three magazines and 58 rounds of ammunition. In another operation at Petsir-Sopore in Baramulla district troops of the 55 battalion recovered two UBGL grenades, three hand grenades and one night device, the spokesman said adding no one was apprehended during the operations.
