Jammu: Security forces have gunned down an area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen Pirpanjal Regiment (HMPPR) and averted a major tragedy by detecting and defusing an Improvised Explosive Device, planted by terrorists, on a roadside in two separate incidents in Rajouri district of Jammu division on Monday, official sources said in Jammu on Tuesday. Rashtriya Rifle troops and police launched a joint operation in Pangai area of Thanamandi tehsil in Rajouri district Monday afternoon and in the subsequent gunbattle shot dead Abu Sofia, an area commander of HMPPR, the sources said. The recoveries from the slain terrorist yielded one AK rifle with its three magazines and three rounds of ammunition, one wireless set, one hand grenade, few pencil cells and some documents, they said, adding the Pakistani terrorist was also involved in many killings in Rajouri. In another incident, security forces during search operation detected an IED planted on a roadside near Rajouri town on Monday evening, the sources said, adding that the area was cordoned off and experts later defused the IED. A major tragedy was averted as ultras had planted the IED to target security vehicles, the sources said. The security forces during search operation in Surankote area of Poonch district recovered one AK rilfe with its one magazine and twenty rounds.
