Ulema's Entry Into Gilgit Banned

Gilgit: The Northern Areas administration has imposed a ban on the entry of clerics in Gilgit for two months, official said. District Magistrate Gilgit, Joudat Ayaz, exercising the powers vested under section 144 Cr PC imposed a ban for two months on the entry of outsider Ulema in a bid to maintain sectarian harmony among various sects in the district. Gilgit, the capital of Northern Areas, has been rocked with sectarian violence in the past. Recently the curriculum issue led to clashes between the law enforcing agencies and Shiites that left one dead and several injured in and around Gilgit city.
