Srinagar: Unidentified assailants in Indian Kashmir have killed a close aide to a hardline Muslim separatist leader. Police said Pir Hissamuddin was shot dead at his home in a Srinagar suburb Wednesday. He was a close aide to Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads a pro-Pakistan faction of the region's main separatist alliance, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. Mr. Geelani condemned the killing and blamed Indian agents. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack. But police say they suspect separatist rebels. Since 1989, a number of Muslim rebel groups has been battling Indian forces for Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan. The violence has already claimed the lives of more than 60,000 people.
