Geelani Taken Into Custody

Srinagar: Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was planning to hold a demonstration against the rape of a woman and her daughter allegedly by an Army officer, was taken into preventive custody along with 12 supporters here today, officials said. Geelani, who was placed under house arrest early this morning, was taken into custody when he and 50 of his supporters moved out of the house shouting anti- government and pro-freedom slogans. National Front Chairman Nayeen Ahmad Khan was among those detained. Geelani told reporters that the Prime Minister's announcement of of troop reduction in J&K was a 'big joke'. Army probe near completion The Army today said the Court of Inquiry into the rape was nearing completion. In a bid to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry, the accused in the case, Major Rehman Hussain, has already been placed under suspension, an Army spokesman said. The suspension orders will be reviewed on completion of the probe.
