31 January 2005
Jammu: After the heavy turnout in the first phase of municipal polls in Jammu and Kashmir despite militant threats and boycott calls by separatists, a three-tier ecurity set up has been put in place for the 2nd phase of polls tomorrow for the 139 wards of Jammu and Srinagar municipal corporations. As many as 7.7 lakh voters will decide the fate of 754 candidates for the 139 wards, Chief Electoral Officer Rakesh Gupta told PTI here today. He said quick reaction teams had been deployed following the threat perception and to ensure trouble-free elections. While 4.4 lakh voters will vote in 68 wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, 3.3 lakh voters would cast their votes for candidates in 71 wards of Jammu Municipal Corporation, he added. The municipal elections are being held in the state after a gap of 27 years and people of Kashmir have shown great enthusiasm to vote for their candidates, he added.
