Mir For Transforming Greater Jammu, Greater Srinagar Concept Into Reality

Jammu: Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Tourism Ghulam Hassan Mir has underscored the need for effective participation by the Municipal Corporator for integrated development of twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar so that the concept of the plan aimed at Greater Jammu and Greater Srinagar emerges into reality. Addressing the maiden conference of Corporator of Jammu city here today, the Minister reiterated Governments keenness to make the Municipal bodies viable and more effective to address the civic problems besides making them financially sound to look after the civic amenities with thrust on aesthetic grandeur. Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Abdul Majid Wani, Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation Kavinder Gupta, Deputy Mayor Rani Bloeria, Commissioner, JMC B.D. Sharma and all Corporator of the corporation attended the day long conference. Enumerating the steps taken by the Government to empower the civic bodies under 3- tier governance in a democratic setup, Mir said that measures are underway to evolve workable mechanism for generating financial resources for the Municipal bodies besides allocating 10 percent of the tax revenue so that the objective of local self governance is achieved with desired and optimum results at the grass root level. Describing the awareness of the role, duties and functions of a councilor imperative for smooth take off local self governance and the coordination with State Government under 3-tier concept, Mir announced that State level orientation conference would be held at the winter capital shortly. Responding to the observations of the councilors including change of 'councilor' nomenclature to ' corporators', the Minister said that a proposal when received would be considered for introducing amendment bill in the Legislature. However, he appreciated the maiden resolution unanimously adopted by the councilors of Jammu city for remaining the road from CPO to Zanana Park after the name of retired General N.C.Vij adding that it is a good step to honour the son of the soil who has rendered untiring and valuable service to the nation. Earlier, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Abdul Majid Wani during his address assured the councilors that Government will extent all sort of assistance for smooth take off of local self governance for which the civic polls in the Urban areas were held adding that the councilors should consider their action plan within the given situation and resources. The Mayor Kavinder Gupta, Deputy Mayor Rani Bloeria, Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation B. D. Sharma and several councilors who spoke on the occasion thanked the Ministers for sharing in the first meeting of the councilors which they termed as good beginning.
