Top Hizbul Commander Among Nine Ultras Killed

Srinagar: Nine ultras, including a top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, and three securitymen were among 15 persons killed in Jammu and Kashmir where security forces destroyed a training camp, busted five hideouts and seized 12 kgs of RDX. In a major setback to Hizbul Mujahideen, its self-styled Divisional Commander cum operational chief for central kashmir Mohammad Yousuf Sheikh was killed in an encounter with police at Ayarigund near Check-e-Ruksun in Badgam district of central Kashmir last night, a police spokesman said today. Sheikh, wanted in connection with the attack on Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and over 75 killings, including that of a PDP worker and a Municipal Councillor, was active since 1990 and was operating in Badgam, Srinagar, Sumbal and Tangmarg areas, the spokesman said. However, his other associates escaped from the scene of the encounter taking advantage of darkness, he said. Sheikh, a resident of Rathsun village of Beerwah who was carrying a reward of Rs five lakh on his head, was operating under the false names of Sajad, Doctor and Osama, he said. In another successful operation, he said police assisted by CRPF destroyed a training camp of militants in Doda district and killed five ultras belonging to Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (hum) group. Acting on a specific information, the police party raided a major militant training camp near Himachal Pradesh border in Sui Patiala forest in Doda district yesterday. A large cache of of arms and ammunition was recovered from the site. Three ultras were killed in an encounter at Koti village in Doda district in which two security personnel also lost their lives. Two AK rifles and a wireless set were recovered from the slain militants. Two persons including an army jawan were killed and another soldier injured in a fierce gunbattle at village Malikpora in Kupwara district in the wee hours today, he spokesman said. The deceased civilian was identified as Ghulam Ahmad Lone. The spokesman said a tenth class student Aijaz Ahmad Khatana was killed when he was caught in a crossfire between militants and security forces at his village at Gudraman in Kokernag area last night. Body of an unidentified person was recovered by police from Khurham in Rajouri district today, the spokesman said. The spokesman said troops busted a hideout in gool area of udhampur district and recovered 12 kg of RDX, water containers, two detonators, four IEDs and some documents early today. Troops recovered two SLRs, 180 rounds, a grenade, a rifle grenade, a solar panal and four blankets from a hideout in Kunan Nala area of Doda district last night, official sources said. Another hidoeut was busted at Koolgwas in Soda district and 85 rounds, an IED, a letter pad of Hizbul Mujahideen and some ammunition was recovered last night, they said. Troops busted two more hideouts in Berirakh and Seri areas in Poonch and Rajouri districts respectively and recovered a pistol, two magazines, eight grenades and a blanket last night, the sources said.
