Musharraf Meets Kashmiri Leaders
7 June 2005
Islamabad: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is meeting moderate separatist leaders from Indian-administered Kashmir to discuss the Kashmir dispute. Gen Musharraf earlier welcomed the visit by the leaders, most of whom are from the All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) organisation. He said it was a significant step towards India and Pakistan understanding each other. It is the first time India has allowed Kashmiri separatists to go to Pakistan. But militant groups and other hardline politicians opposed to Indian rule oppose the visit. They have accused Pakistan of making too many concessions to India. They also fear India and Pakistan will agree to turn the UN- designated Line of Control that divides Kashmir into a permanent border. Earlier the visiting politicians met Pakistani Foreign Minister Khursheed Kasuri, who reiterated Islamabad's support for the Kashmiris. The separatist leaders insist that they should be included in the peace talks between India and Pakistan.
