3 Militants Arrested In Valley

Srinagar: Three militants were arrested and a huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered on the eve of independence day across Kashmir where two persons were killed by ultras since last evening, a police spokesman said today. Two militants of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and an over ground worker of Hizbul Mujahideen were arrested at villages Turk Wanigam and Kadagam-Zainapora in Shopian area of Pulwama district today, the spokesman said, adding 100 rounds, a wireless set and four hand grenades were recovered from them. Intensified patrolling in the valley led to the recovery of 8,337 rounds of ammunition, two rocket launchers, a wireless set at Nowgam in between an under construction railway station Kanihama on the outskirts of Srinagar. Police assisted by security forces also recovered 1,323 rounds of ammunition and two magazines from a nallah at Chanapora in the city today, he said. A pistol, its one magazine and five rounds, four hand grenades and four Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL) were also recovered from a forest area of Firken under police station Trehgam in frontier district of Kupwara, the spokesman said. Meanwhile in Baramulla, security forces today averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants near a bank. Official sources said security forces during a routine patroll detected an ied planted near the State Bank of India (SBI). They said the bomb disposal squad was immediately summoned and they later defused the IED.
