1 September 2005
Srinagar: Indian troops shot dead nine militants trying to sneak into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistani side, a spokesman said on Thursday, as top officials of the two countries began talks to review a peace process. The casualty toll of infiltrators was the highest in six weeks. The fighting took place in the Nowgam area of Kupwara district, northwest of Srinagar, Indian Kashmir's main city, Indian army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel V.K. Batra said. 'A heavily armed group of terrorists tried to infiltrate in Nowgam sector. Nine were killed in a night-long gun battle,' he said. Top diplomats of India and Pakistan began talks in Islamabad to nudge forward a slow-moving peace process and prepare the ground for a meeting between their leaders.
