Srinagar: Indian troops killed three Islamic militants in a border district of revolt-hit Kashmir, the Indian army said on Monday. The three militants were killed during a gun battle in the village of Lashtial in Kupwara district' on Sunday, army spokesman Vijay Batra said. He also said that the slain rebels belonged to the region's powerful separatist group Hizbul Mujahedin, which wants Indian-ruled Kashmir to join Pakistan while one of the slain rebels was a Hizbul battalion commander. The heavily-militarized district on the ceasefire line separating the Indian and Pakistani zones of Kashmir is prone to the cross-border movement of militants who launched an insurgency against Indian rule in 1989.More than 44,000 people have died in the Himalayan region since the unrest broke out. Separatists put the toll at twice as high. India accuses Pakistan of arming, funding and facilitating the entry of militants into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistani side. However, Islamabad denies the charge and says no infiltration is taking place.
