Srinagar: Two days after security forces wiped out an 8-member group of infiltrating militants in Gulmarg sector, troops have eliminated yet another infiltrating group of 8 militants in Nowgam sector of Handwara in Kupwara district. Informed sources said that troops in ambush observed the movement of a heavily armed group of militants in Nowgam sector last evening. When the militants fell in the trap, troops opened fire and engaged them in a fierce encounter. Militants retaliated for over two hours but forces managed to kill all the eight militants of the group. Defence sources said that five AK rifles and two pistols were recovered from the possession of the militants killed. Their identity could not be ascertained till late tonight. Sources said that troops did not suffer any damage in the gunbattle. Heavy infiltration of militants has been observed on eight infiltration routes in Kupwara district this year. Even as more than 200 militants have been killed, an equal number of them are believed to have managed to reach the Valley plains. Meanwhile, suspected militants today opened indiscriminate gunfire on the Gypsy of a Congress party activist and a Councilor of Municipal Committee Shopian, namely Mohammad Shafi Banday , at an open spot between Gabbarpora and Keegam on Srinagar-Shopian Road. Banday had a miraculous escape but his driver, Mohammad Iqbal of Security Wing, and PSO, Constable Bashir Ahmed, sustained critical injuries. The Congress leader and his driver and PSO were evacuated by Police and security forces. The injured were admitted to a hospital where a critically wounded, constable-driver Mohammad Iqbal of Herpora Shopian, breathed his last.
