J&K Minister, Three Others Killed In Mlitant Attack

Srinagar: Piercing the high security area, heavily-armed militants today shot dead the Jammu and Kahsmir Minister of state for education Ghulam Nabi Lone at his official residence in Tulsibagh locality here triggering a gun battle that left two securitymen and an attacker dead. Firing indiscriminately and hurling hand grenades, two militants first attacked the residence of CPI-M MLA Yousuf Tarigami. After being challenged by his security personnel there, the militants barged into the neighbouring house of Lone and opened fire injuring him critically. The 62-year old Lone, who had joined PDP just before the assembly elections only three years ago and won from Sangrama constiuency, was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him brought-dead. He is the first minister of the Mufti Sayeed government to have fallen to militancy. Two militant outfits - al Mansoorian and Islamic Jehad Front - separately claimed responsibility for the attack that took place at around 0900 hrs a day after a CPI-M leader Ghulam Nabi Ganai was killed in Matan, 65 kms from here.
