Gilgit: Schools and colleges, including the Karakoram International University, will reopen after the Eid holidays, official sources said on Monday. Sources said almost all the educational institutions in Gilgit were closed after the violence in Gilgit on October 13. 'The administration will consider reopening the educational institutions (both government and private) after Eid, strictly subject to the improving security conditions in the city,' sources added. Sources said because of the closure of schools, the examination schedules and other programmes had been postponed. A fresh date would be announced for the exams and activities that were scheduled to take place in the second week of November. Meanwhile, the 41 people detained under 16 MPO (maintenance of public order) on Thursday and who were transferred to the empty barracks built for the Northern Areas Scouts in Sakwar, have reportedly been on a hunger strike for the last two days against the unhygienic food, maltreatment and inadequate facilities in the sub-jail. Sources said the detainees from both the sects have displayed handwritten placards outside their cells.
