House Arrest For Kashmir Leader
7 February 2006
Srinagar: A senior separatist leader in Indian-administered Kashmir, Maulvi Abbas Ansari, has been placed under house arrest. The move was to prevent him leading a procession to observe the Islamic month of Muharram, officials say. The procession had been due to take place despite an official ban on such processions through residential areas of the city. Some 20 people were injured when police used teargas at another procession. Muharram marks the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson Hussein.
