Two jawans, militant among four killed

Srinagar: Four persons including two Army jawans, a militant and a civilian were killed in the region while two top Hizbul Mujahideen militants including a 'tehsil commander' today surrendered before police and Army in Doda along with a large quantity of arms and ammunition. Police destroyed a hide-out of the militants at Paryot near Pul Doda and recovered 40 kg RDX. Two Army jawans and a militant were killed in a fierce exchange of gun-battle at village Kund, about seven kms from Mahore in Reasi police district this evening, official sources said. Other militants hiding in the dhok escaped, they said, adding the Army fatalities included one Havildar and a Sepoy. Identity of the slain militant hasn't been established. One AK rifle, two magazines and one radio set were recovered from the slain militant. The operation was on when the reports last came in with security forces hunting the fleeing militants. A civilian Makhan Din was kidnapped and hanged with a tree by the militants in Gursai area of Mendhar tehsil in Poonch district last night. His dead body was recovered by the police today. Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, one of whom was operating since 1994 and another since 2000, surrendered before SSP Doda Prithvi Raj Manhas, SP (Operations) Doda Varinder Sharma and officers of 10 Rashtriya Rifles in Doda this evening, the sources said. The militants have been identified as Mohd Amin alias Yasin (set code Younis) son of Abdul Majeed Malik, a 'tehsil commander' of the outfit and Altaf Hussain (code name Capt Masood) son of Abdul Rehman, both residents of Thalela, Doda. They handed over two AK-56 rifles, six magazines, 174 AK rounds and two Motorola wireless sets at the time of surrender. Mohd Amin was an active Hizbul Mujahideen militant since 1994 and had undergone training in Pakistan while Altaf Hussain was operating since 2000. After their surrender, the militants have been sent for questioning to ascertain hide-outs of Hizbul Mujahideen and raid them. Some encounters are expected on the basis of their disclosures, the sources said. With today's surrenders, a total of 14 militants have laid down arms before Army and Doda police this year so far. The surrenders have created panic among the cadre of Hizbul Mujahideen, they added. Doda police busted a hide-out of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants at Paryot in Pul Doda area this morning and recovered 40 kg RDX and 17 AK rounds. The militants were not present in the hide-out at the time of raid. Police and security forces destroyed another hide-out of the militants at Keri, Galhuta in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district and recovered 80 AK rounds, two cassettes, two CDs and some ration items. Police party in the search operation was led by SHO Surjeet Singh. The party also comprised jawans of CRPF's 150 battalion. A Special Police Officer (SPO) was injured in an encounter with the militants at village Batogra under the jurisdiction of Thathri police station in Doda district early this morning. Injured SPO has been identified as Sajjad Ahmed (No. 177). He was evacuated from the firing site and admitted in the hospital. Security forces and police have launched a search operation in the area to trace the militants, who escaped during the exchange of firing.
