J&K Expects 83 Lakh Tourists In 2006

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government is expecting more than 83 lakh pilgrims and tourists to visit the state this year, State Tourism Ministry sources said here.We expect that as many as 83,45,000 tourists, including pilgrims, will visit Jammu and Kashmir, including the famous cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi and Amarnath this year, the sources told PTI. They said they expected around eight lakh general tourists-both foreign and domestic to visit Kashmir and 45,000 to visit Ladakh. Similarly, around 70 lakh and five lakh pilgrims are expected to visit Mata Vaishno Devi and Amarnath respectively, they said. 'It is well known that tourism sector is extremely critical for the economy of our state in view of its huge employment potential and we are making all efforts to ensure more and more tourist inflow and improved facilities for the tourists', they said. 'Tourists are our guests and, therefore, the Ministry of Tourism's slogan 'Atithi devo bhava' applies to us as much,' they said. They said efforts are afoot to upgrade the tourist infrastructure both in the private as well as public sector to bring Jammu and Kashmir on the world tourism map. In this direction, the centre has sanctioned Rs. 53.8 crore for development of new tourist destinations, they said.
