Woman among six advisers in N. Areas
3 July 2006
Gilgit: Northern Areas’ Chief Executive and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Tahir Iqbal announced appointment of his six advisers, including a woman, from among 36 members of the Northern Areas Legislative Council (NACL) in its session held on Monday. Elections and composition of the NALC and NAs’ cabinet is governed by the Legal Framework Order for Northern Areas of 1994. The announcement came after a 20-month delay as elections to the NALC were held in October 2004. The elections of the speaker, the deputy chief executive and the deputy speaker were held in November 2004 but selection of advisers, which is at the discretion of the chief executive, were held back over till filling of 12 reserved seats — six each for women and technocrats. Elections to these seats were held on March 22 this year. The advisers from six districts include Mirza Hussain (Gilgit), Abdul Hameed (Astore), Mohammad Ibrahim Sanai (Gangche), Sikander Ali (Skardu), Haji Abdul Quddus (Diamer) and Mrs Noorul Ain (Ghizer). The chief executive, however, has not yet assign them portfolios. Four NALC members — Imran Nadeem, Dr Muzaffar Ali Khan Raley, Atiqa Ghazanfar and Shaikh Niasr Sirbaz — were absent from the session.
