Top guerrilla killed in Kashmir

Srinagar: Riyaz Ahmad Bhat, the mastermind of Saturday's hand grenade attack in south Kashmir that killed a former legislator and four others, has been gunned down, police said Monday.A gun battle took place between security forces and guerrillas at Kachipora Qazigund in Anantnag district of south Kashmir Sunday night, a police spokesman said here.'In the heavy exchange of fire, Riyaz Ahmad Bhat, self- styled district commander of Hizbul Mujaheedin, was killed. 'Along with two other militants of the outfit, he had masterminded the grenade attack on senior regional National Conference (NC) leader and sitting legislator Sakina Ittoo at Kulgam,' the spokesman said.He said arms and ammunition, including one AK-47 rifle and two magazines, as well as incriminating documents were recovered from the shootout site. Saturday's grenade explosion killed five people including former legislator Ghulam Nabi Dar of NC and injured 50 in Kulgam town, 75 km from here.
