21 July 2006
Srinagar: Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani was today placed under house arrest, official sources said. Geelani had called for a bandh in Jammu and Kashmir today in protest against the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Palestine. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed outside Geelani's residence at Hyderpora since 0500 hours and asked him not to venture out, the sources said. Meanwhile, life in Srinagar and other towns of the valley was disrupted in response to the bandh call. Shops and business establishments in Srinagar and other parts of the valley remained closed while traffic on the roads was thin, the sources added.
