Terrorist killed in Kashmir

Jammu: A terrorist, who officials say is from Pakistan, and a member of India's Territorial Army were killed in a fierce shootout in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, officials said Friday.The firefight, which began Thursday afternoon in the Gundana area of Doda district, also resulted in the burning down of two houses Friday morning. Five Indian soldiers were injured.According to officials, another terrorist said to be involved in the May 1 massacre of 22 Hindus in the state was reported to be trapped in a house in the area, about 200 km north of Jammu.Acting on a tip-off by police, a joint team of the police and army raided the militants' hideout in Gundana.Jammu's Inspector General of Police S.P. Vaid told IANS that a terrorist, from whose pocket a slip reading Abul Zubair of Pakistan was recovered, was killed in the encounter. 'The militants are still under siege,' he said.The shootout had begun at 3 p.m. Militants used grenades and fired from AK-47 rifles at the police and soldiers.Police said the name of the militant involved in the May 1 massacre is Ashraf Ganai.'The exact number of militants trapped and their identities would be known only after the encounter is over,' Vaid said.
