Srinagar: The venue of the main Independence Day function here has been sealed and police and security personnel given special identity cards to prevent a repeat of the militant attack on a Congress rally in May. Tight security arrangements were in place around most vital installations particularly near Bakshi Stadium, the venue of the main function tomorrow, officials said. Several roads around the stadium had been put off limits for civilian traffic and patrolling intensified in view of inputs about militants planning a major strike ahead or during Independence Day, they said. They said police and security force personnel had been provided special identity cards to prevent a repeat of May 21 when militants dressed in police uniform sneaked into Sher- i-Kashmir Stadium, where Congress was holding a rally on the 16th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Three persons were killed inthe attack and scores injured, including then Kashmir Inspector-General of Police K Rajendra Kumar. The officials said random frisking, vehicle checking, area domination and deployment of reserves were some of the highlights of the security arrangements. 'The security forces are determined to foil the nefarious designs of militants,' they said referring to detection of an explosive-laden car near the airport by police last Wednesday. Special check points and additional barricades had been set up at major roads across the Kashmir Valley and vehicles entering Srinagar were being thoroughly checked.
